Tsunamis are large water waves, typically generated by seismic activity, that have historically caused significant damage to coastal communities throughout the world. The plate that has the Indian Ocean on it moved roughly north-east and collided with Sumatra.
|
|
|
The Indian Ocean plate got subducted underneath Sumatra causing the earthquake, one of the largest ever, being 8.9 on the Richter scale.
There has been a rupture along a fault about 1,000km long, generating a vertical displacement of about 10m in the sea floor causing the huge Tsunami.
More than 2,00,000 people were killed in 12 countries in southern Asia and Africa from Sunday's massive earthquake and tsunami waves, according to official figures.
The Tsunami lashed the eastern and southern coastal areas of India on Sunday
leaving massive destruction in its wake.
The devastation that has hit the Coastal belt of South
India has taken away many lives, left thousands homeless and young ones as
orphans. We at Round Table India have taken up this as a very IMPORTANT focussed activity. And we also had first few site visits to most of the effected areas by a team of
Tablers (comprising members of the National Boards in those geographies).
You may know that the situation in reality is MUCH WORSE than what is reported in the media. The actual devastation is much beyond the numbers that you would have heard, there is a lot that we need to do to be able to bring some rehabilitation to the
affected people. Round Table India has set up a TCMT - Tsunami Crisis Management Team, which is doing a physical inspection on the situation. We have decided that we are taking care of whatever best relief can be done immediately. We will also be undertaking some very large scale rehabilitation work shortly.
We request you to support this effort of ours. Please use your good offices and make out an appeal to all Tablers /
Circlers / WOCO Members of all Associations worldwide to support Round Table India in this efforts. We (at Round Table India) are ready and fully geared to support this rehabilitation drive. Contributions can be made to the
"Tsumani Crisis Fund" to support this relief and rehabilitation drive. All remitances can be made as Cheques or Demand Drafts in the name of
"Round Table India Trust".

LONG TERM - PERSPECTIVE
Round Table India's works with Tamilnadu Govt... Round Table India has been recognised by Govt. of Tamil Nadu as one of the 8 Non Governmental Organisations taking up rehabilitation work in Tsunami affected areas .Thereafter the Govt gave us the list of primary schools which needs complete reconstruction / major repairs / minor repairs. These schools total upto 158. We have recieved copies of the Govt. Orders from the Special Commissioners office to all the 10 District Collectors (of the Areas effected by the Tsunami). The letter is very explicit that Round Table India will be undertaking the building of the schools and also be responsible for the project execution and implementation.
Our commitment is to rebuild all the schools in this list. Our members, alongwith certified engineers and contractors, will be doing a rece of the schools and we will then have a correct estimate in hand, but as of now we estimate the amount to be well over Rs. 50 Million (US$ 1.14 Million).
We have already met up with the District Collectors of Chennai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Villupuram and Nagapattinam and all are accpetable to work with us. Govt. of Tamilnadu had issued orders to the District Collectors to extend the necessary assistance to RTI in reconstruction of schools. Tr. Sakthivel Raja (RT 100) has been appointed as National Convenor - Tsunami Projects.
So, we have overcome all the legal and Governmental obstacles and are now on the roll towards bringing the smiles to the numerous children who are currently unable to go to school due to lack of infrastructure which Tsunami has destroyed.
The modalities for the long-term perspective are being worked out in consultation with the National Board of RTI ASAP.
Tsunami Crisis Management Team has been formed and consists of the following
Tablers:
Tr.SHIVKUMAR EASHWARAN (RT 42) Chief Co-ordinator-98410-32307
